Truth Matters

These days many believe that truth is relative rather than absolute and it seems hard to define truth. Unfortunately, this is exactly where the devil wants us. If we are confused about the truth, then it will be difficult to be set free from his traps. He knows that it is the truth that sets us free. Therefore, we must be very careful to guard what we know is God’s truth. We should not give in to culture as it twists the truth for individual benefit. Even the slightest untruth can bring about great distress. Remember, it is a little leaven that spoils the whole batch of dough, and it is the little foxes that ruin the vineyard. What seems like a little white lie could bring about great darkness.

But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one. Matthew 5:37

I have had many people who have told me they will call me, or we will get together at a certain time, but they often do not do as they say. Now, life can be crazy, and they may be busy. And I have been guilty of this too, just to be clear. However, I am understanding even more that as a Christian that even though it may not seem like a big deal, it is important that the words I speak are true to my actions, or else I could cause a lot of problems. When I say I will be at a place at a certain time, I should be there at that time. I want God to be right on time to answer my prayers, so I shouldn’t arrive late to do His work or anything else. If I make a promise, I should keep it. It is not just about my integrity, but I am also a representative of Jesus who is the way, the truth, and the life. And He wants us all sanctified in truth.

They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth. John 17:16-19

The world doesn’t care much about the truth. Many people exaggerate their qualifications and too many companies employ false advertising for financial benefit. This is normal in the world, but unfortunately a lot of Christians do this also because they say that everyone does it and they are taking advantage of certain opportunities. We may even omit the truth, and although we have failed to tell the truth, we feel that we are fine because we didn’t actually lie. We are called to be separate from the world and should not utilize its tactics. We are to be salt and light. But many of us have lost our saltiness and we have watered down God’s message in our words and in our lives. We have hidden our light, instead of shining it brightly in the darkness.

So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. But you did not learn Christ in this way, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. Ephesians 4:17-24

When we put the old man aside, the new man must put on the belt of truth and never take it off. It is an important part of our armor in our fight against the enemy. We should not love with just our word, but also in our actions and in truth, as love rejoices in the truth. And the truth is the whole Gospel. Not just parts of it taken out to support a lifestyle. Our lives should embody the truth of the Gospel, which is more than just a sermon. We should be doers of the word and not only hearers as we would be deceiving ourselves. We should live God’s truth in our everyday lives.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 2 Timothy 4:3-4

The truth matters. We must never turn away from it. The truth frees us and protects us. God loves the truth. Jesus is Truth. Therefore, we should allow the Spirit of truth to guide us into all truth.

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15
