Supporting Life

Floribeth, who was born blind in the Chirripó Mountains, Costa Rica
For You created my innermost parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, because I am awesomely and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, and skillfully formed in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my formless substance; And in Your book were written all the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them. Psalm 139:13-16

It is fascinating for me to see how many beautiful children there are throughout the world. Children who live in some horrible conditions, yet they laugh, they play, and they are happy, not knowing any other life. Their lives may not seem like the abundant life on the outside because not only do they lack material possessions, but many times, they often lack the basic necessities. Yet, they have joy that many people who possess so much more do not have.

Life is not easy for so many of these children. Floribeth is less than a year old and was born blind in a village in the Chirippó Mountains, Costa Rica, where these indigenous people are nearly forgotten. Many people in Costa Rica do not even know they exist and think they are just a mythical story. Yet they are real, and God sees them, knows them, and loves them. He has sent Pastor Olman Sanchez to walk hours to help them and He has made them known to many other people in not only Costa Rica, but the rest of the world. A retired teacher from Jamaica heard about Floribeth and wanted to help her. I was so amazed that she would give of her meagre pension, but she wanted to help support Floribeth with the little she had because she knew God would have her do this. God would also have us do the same and assist the children in need in our community, country and all over the world.

A Muslim girl learns English at a Christian school at a brick kiln factory in Pakistan where her family lives in slavery
Yet You are He who brought me forth from the womb; You made me trust when upon my mother’s breasts. I was cast upon You from birth; You have been my God from my mother’s womb. Do not be far from me, for trouble is near; For there is no one to help. Psalm 22:9-11

How can there be no help? As Christians, we are called to be God’s hands, feet, and heart. The Bible tells us it is better to give than receive and blessed are those who give to the poor. However, too many Christians hold on to what they have while waiting for God to bless them with more. Each of us are called to help people live, whether they are almost forgotten in the Chirripó Mountains, slaves at a brick kiln factory in Pakistan, or isolated in the South American Amazon.

God has ordained each life from before the mother’s womb and it is important for each Christian to help the vulnerable babies live from conception in the womb, to birth and beyond.

Children in the Bolivian Amazon eat bread, which they usually do no have, given to them by Christian missionaries
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5

Isn’t it wonderful to know that God has a plan for each of us before He formed us in our mother’s womb? Not one baby conceived was a mistake but was thoughtfully designed by the Creator. God had a blueprint for each of our lives before we were conceived. It doesn’t matter the circumstances of our conception and birth, He had us in mind from the beginning of time. Floribeth may have been born blind, but God has a plan for her and so we who know her and can help her should surround her with love and support whether we are near or far. We are to help nurture her life to fulfil God’s plan. Who knows, she could be the next Fanny Crosby, who was blind from she was six weeks old, but still wrote over 8,000 hymns such as “To God be the Glory” and “Blessed Assurance”. We may want to define how our lives should be and we may desire comfort and for everything to work well in our lives. Despite this, we should seek an intimate relationship with God for Him to define our lives and He will make us victorious instead of victims, and triumphant in the middle of our trials. And that is the abundant life, which we should all be supporting and helping each other to have.
